Additional notes:
This appears to be a copy of the TMQ title
Belfast Cowboy. It was long thought the tapes for
this title was taken from the 1971 Pacific High recordings. Some excellent investigative
work by David Walker has established that the first three songs are actually from the
Rainbow show of July 24, 1973. This would mean that the source was probably the
video broadcast. See David's note at the entry for the CD version
of this title, also called Desert Land.
Liner states "All Songs recorded live in USA, November 1971" - but see notes below.
Review from Ric Kabat:
The sound quality is very good. There is no listing of musicians, but I would
guess that the band is made up of most of the people who played on the songs
on This Is Van Morrison.
Notes from David Walker:
All sources I've encountered state that Desert Land is simply an
abbreviated offering of the famous, oft-booted Pacific High Studios radio
performance of September 5, 1971. This is not entirely accurate. The first
three songs on Desert Land ("Brown-Eyed Girl," "Moonshine Whiskey,"
and "Moondance") are definitely from a different concert than the remaining
four songs, which are indeed from the Pacific High show.
Based on information found on Nathan Wirth's excellent home page, I've concluded that the three mystery songs actually come from VTM's concert at the Rainbow Theatre in London on July 24, 1973, during the great Caledonia Soul Orchestra tour. Much of this show wound up on It's Too Late To Stop Now. This particular show was also broadcast on radio and TV in Europe.
Also, it would seem that the Desert Land CD is simply a digital copy of the famous vinyl boot Belfast Cowboy (TMOQ 73035).
